If so, please nominate them for a 2017 Invader Crusader Award.  The Wisconsin Invasive Species Council is accepting nominations for individuals, groups, or organizations for their exemplary efforts at addressing issues surrounding terrestrial and aquatic invasive species, including plants, pests, animals and disease-causing organisms. The 2017 Invader Crusader Awards will be presented to both volunteers and professionals. Please consider nominating adults and youth you work with or from your community. The deadline for submitting Invader Crusader nominations is Friday, March 17, 2017.

Catching up on some news....

Subject: AIS Grant Awarded to Oneida Co. AIS Program
Good afternoon,

The Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department’s Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program is proud to announce it has received a $34,247.00 AIS Education, Prevention and Planning grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  These funds will support the Oneida County AIS Prevention and Control Project 2017-2018 aimed to empower Oneida County’s fight against AIS and safeguard our valuable water resources for current and future generations.

The Project sustains the AIS Program’s mission to “develop and implement an aquatic invasive species (AIS) plan of action that prevents and manages AIS in Oneida County lakes, rivers, and wetlands.”  Additionally, the Project fosters collaboration, support, and participation among lake associations, riparian owners, school groups, businesses, various organizations and partners.

A key component of the Project is the hiring of three limited term employees (LTE’s) to perform AIS management, monitoring, and outreach activities and broaden awareness and understanding of AIS. Some of the many activities the LTE’s will be working on include: Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) watercraft inspections, lead/participate in student and adult educational field events and workshops, develop and distribute outreach material, update the AIS website and Facebook page, newsletter articles, AIS management, Purple Loosestrife biocontrol, restore and rehabilitate ecosystems affected by AIS, and perform Citizen Lake Monitoring Network AIS early detection monitoring, mapping, and data collection on county waterbodies.

In addition to Oneida County’s AIS Program, a round of applause must be given to the many lake associations and partners in Oneida County that were awarded grant funding through the DNR’s AIS Grant Program. The awarded grants, consisting of AIS Education, Prevention, and Planning Grants ($130,325.13) and AIS Control Clean Boats Clean Waters Grants ($68,710.50), total $199,035.63 and will support AIS education, prevention, control, and management efforts and activities throughout Oneida County.

Funding provided by the DNR’s AIS Grant program is necessary for all Oneida County partners to remain committed to a successful AIS program, which provides critical protection to our valuable natural resources, sensitive ecosystems, recreational opportunities, waterfront property values, and enjoyment for current and future generations.

Congratulations to all recipients.
