Good Morning,

Due to weather, tomorrows (May 27^th) Clean Boats Clean Waters workshop has moved indoors to the Oneida County Courthouse, Committee Room 2 (second floor, across the hall from Planning and Zoning). The courthouse is located at 1 South Oneida Avenue, Rhinelander WI.     Same time 5:-6:30 pm.   Bring a coat because at the end of the workshop, we will head outside to go over watercraft inspection checkpoint on the DNRs boat.

There is still time to sign-up for the workshop. Please call 715-369-7835 to register.

Subject: Oneida County AIS Presents A Night at the Movies

Good Friday Afternoon,

Are you looking for a special way to celebrate Earth Week (April 17-21) and Earth Day (April 22)?   If so, bring the entire family to the movies to see the spectacular documentary “Making Waves: Battle for the Great Lakes” on the big screen.  

You can see it on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in Three Lakes, WI.  It is FREE to the public.   Seating is still available and an RSVP is encouraged. Call Oneida County Land & Water at 715-369-7835 to reserve your seat.

This two-hour documentary about aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes, will take viewers below the surface of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem and into the middle of a complex war for survival. Narrated by Bill Kurtis, “Making Waves” traces the path of the invasion and joins researchers on the front lines as they combat invasive species and work to restore native species, in an effort to prevent a biological takeover of the Great Lakes. This documentary includes our own AIS Coordinator, Stephanie Boismenue and County Conservationist, Michele Sadauskas as they highlight “local” AIS issues throughout Oneida County. As the 2017 boating season begins, the Oneida County AIS Team is gearing up to help both new and seasoned Clean Boats, Clean Waters Watercraft Inspectors become armed with how and why educational awareness is so important in preventing the spread of AIS and learn the tips and tricks of the trade.  This fun and educational event will take place during three FREE Clean Boats, Clean Waters workshops, hosted by Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department.

Three Clean Boats, Clean Waters Workshops

Workshop presenters include:

 Sandy Wickman, Outreach Specialists - University of Wisconsin Extension Lakes and Water Resource Management Specialist - Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, will present “Hands-on Aquatic Plant Species Identification.” Her wealth of knowledge will help you understand the beautiful underwater gardens that live below the water’s surface and help you to become a pro at spotting native and invasive plants.

 Stephanie Boismenue, AIS Coordinator - Oneida County Land & Water Conservation Department, will present “Look What the Craft Dragged In” as she walks you through a real watercraft inspection from start to finish and shows you how and where invasive species are most likely to hitch a ride. She will also discuss the upcoming statewide AIS Drain Campaign and the Fourth of July Boat Landing Blitz.

 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Conservation Warden’s will present “A Law Enforcement Perspective” and share their role in protecting our natural resources by preventing the spread of AIS.

o David Walz, Supervisor, Conservation Warden, will present in Three Lakes

o Tim Ebert, Conservation Warden, will present in Minocqua

Help Wetlands, Raise Beetles

The Oneida County AIS Program is always in need of volunteers (individuals, school groups, and organizations) to help rear the calla beetle as part of the state-wide purple loosestrife biocontrol program. If you are curious about theses interesting little beetles and/or considering becoming a volunteer, you can read about them in this article, “Help Wanted, Raise Beetles” on the Live from the Lakes: A Wisconsin Lakes Blog website. High school artists, angling enthusiasts sought for DNR trout and salmon stamp contests

Do you know of a student in grades 9-12 who has a talent for creating stunning trout and salmon works of art? If so, here is a chance of a lifetime to have their masterpiece printed on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2018 Wisconsin inland trout stamp or a Great Lakes salmon and trout stamp. Wow, what an honor!  These beautiful stamps must be purchased by anglers (including myself) who wish to pursue trout and salmon on inland waters or the Great Lakes and are purchased in addition to the state fishing license. Better yet, revenue from the stamp sales is used for restoring and maintaining habitat and in the case of the Great Lakes stamp, for stocking and rearing trout and salmon.
