Celebrate Earth Week April17-22

From: Steph Boismenue <sboismenue@co.oneida.wi.us>
Date: April 13, 2017 at 5:13:22 PM CDT
Subject: Oneida County AIS Presents A Night at the Movies
Good Friday Afternoon,

Are you looking for a special way to celebrate Earth Week (April 17-21) and Earth Day (April 22)?   If so, bring the entire family to the movies to see the spectacular documentary “Making Waves: Battle for the Great Lakes” on the big screen.
You can see it on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in Three Lakes, WI.  It is FREE to the public.   Seating is still available and an RSVP is encouraged. Call Oneida County Land & Water at 715-369-7835 to reserve your seat.

This two-hour documentary about aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes, will take viewers below the surface of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystem and into the middle of a complex war for survival. Narrated by Bill Kurtis, “Making Waves” traces the path of the invasion and joins researchers on the front lines as they combat invasive species and work to restore native species, in an effort to prevent a biological takeover of the Great Lakes. This documentary includes our own AIS Coordinator, Stephanie Boismenue and County Conservationist, Michele Sadauskas as they highlight “local” AIS issues throughout Oneida County. To view a trailer of Making Waves, visit www.makingwavesdocumentary.com

This special presentation of “Making Waves” is provided by Oneida County and Vilas County Land and Water Conservation Departments.

Have a great weekend,

Steph

AIS News and an Opportunity for High School Artists

From: Steph Boismenue <sboismenue@co.oneida.wi.us>
Date: March 24, 2017 at 4:27:30 PM CDT
Subject: Oneida County AIS News 3-24-17
Good afternoon,

I wanted to share with you a few AIS and natural resource related articles, plus a fantastic opportunity for high school artists to enter the DNR’s trout and salmon stamp contest:

Help Wetlands, Raise Beetles
The Oneida County AIS Program is always in need of volunteers (individuals, school groups, and organizations) to help rear the calla beetle as part of the state-wide purple loosestrife biocontrol program. If you are curious about theses interesting little beetles and/or considering becoming a volunteer, you can read about them in this article, “Help Wanted, Raise Beetles” on the Live from the Lakes: A Wisconsin Lakes Blog website. Let me know if you would like to become a volunteer for the program and I will be happy to provide you with information, resources and help you get set-up. Click on the link for read the full article.  http://lakes-l.blogs.govdelivery.com/2017/03/help-wetlands-raise-beetles/

High school artists, angling enthusiasts sought for DNR trout and salmon stamp contests
Do you know of a student in grades 9-12 who has a talent for creating stunning trout and salmon works of art? If so, here is a chance of a lifetime to have their masterpiece printed on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2018 Wisconsin inland trout stamp or a Great Lakes salmon and trout stamp. Wow, what an honor!  These beautiful stamps must be purchased by anglers (including myself) who wish to pursue trout and salmon on inland waters or the Great Lakes and are purchased in addition to the state fishing license. Better yet, revenue from the stamp sales is used for restoring and maintaining habitat and in the case of the Great Lakes stamp, for stocking and rearing trout and salmon.
Details about this incredible opportunity can be found here: http://dnr.wi.gov/news/Weekly/?id=580#art4

Below is a link to several articles that may be of interest to you, published in The DNR Weekly News Update, and include:
•             New catch and release state record fish category to create excitement for anglers when 2017 season opens
•             Maple Fest to be held April 1 at MacKenzie Center
•             Public input sought as Wisconsin DNR, Michigan DNR, Chippewa bands ready walleye rehabilitation effort for Lac Vieux Desert
•             High school artists, angling enthusiasts sought for DNR trout and salmon stamp contests
•             Protect oak trees from oak wilt by waiting until after July to prune
•             2017 revision to the Broad Incidental Take Permit and Authorization for activities with no or low impact to endangered resources in Wisconsin

As always, don’t forget to check out the Oneida County AIS website www.oneidacountyais.com and like us on Facebook.

Have a fantastic weekend.
