Purple Looestrife Alert

This last weekend our boys at the boat landing discovered some pretty flowers and said they looked like the Purple loosestrife.

So Monday I cut one off and took it to the DNR to be checked out. A short while later I got a call from Sandy Wickman of the DNR and she said that it was the Purple loosestrife. She then told me what to do for now.

• To carefully cut the blooms off and then cut the stems as close to the ground.
• Then to put all into a trash bag and then into the garbage which will then go to the landfill.
This Morning I went to the landing and fault off Bumble Bees trying to pollinate.
Then followed Sandy’s instructions and cut all that I could find.
Sandy also told me that she would be putting our lake on the Beetle list for next spring.
She said they have a beetle that loves to eat the Purple loosestrifeplant.
 
This next weekend Paul and I will be slowly checking the lake shoreline for any more.

As the petals fall off that is where the seeds are.

Timber Wolf Sighting

I got an email from my neighbor Leon Sammuelson this morning telling me about his wolf sighting......

"This morning, when walking my daughter’s dog, 2 big timber wolves crossed the road near Cook’s driveway. The 1^st one was standing in the road staring back at me before he took off across the cutover area. Hopefully wasn’t looking at the dog as possible breakfast J!

The 1^st one had a broad head, short round ears, was very dark gray/black, 2^nd one I didn’t get a good look at was more gray, I’m certain they were wolves, not coyotes. "

That must have been pretty exciting and I certainly wish I would have seen them with my camera in hand, but I'll be on the lookout just in case.

Blue-Green Algae Outbreaks

Good morning everyone-

It is that time of year again when Oneida County lakes are experiencing blue-green algae blooms.  At this time we have confirmed reports of blue-green algae outbreaks on the following lakes:

Pelican Lake

Lake Nokomis

Sand Lake

This is not an all-inclusive list, there may be other lakes experiencing algae-blooms that I am not aware of.  I have attached a  wonderful document that explains what blue-green algae is, what it looks like, helpful tips, and links to even more information!  If you suspect a blue-green algae bloom on your lake, please contact Jim Kreitlow, James.Kreitlow@wisconsin.gov, or Gina LaLiberte, Gina.LaLiberte@wisconsin.gov.

ONEIDA COUNTY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT SEEKS

FEEDBACK ON AMENDMENTS TO THE ONEIDA COUNTY

ZONING AND SHORELAND PROTECTION ORDINANCE.

The Oneida County Planning and Development Committee is conducting a survey to assess public opinion on boathouses and piers.  The survey will be conducted from July 14, 2014 through August 15, 2014.  The survey is web based and can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NDT9S6S or by going to the Oneida County website at http://www.co.oneida.wi.gov and clicking on Announcements.

Oneida County currently allows boathouses with specific restrictions on the shore of a lake.  Oneida County and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regulates the placement of piers on lakes, rivers and streams.  The survey will be asking specific questions on both topics.  The Committee wants to hear your opinions to assist them in formatting possible changes to the Oneida County Zoning and Shoreland Protection Ordinance.

New AIS Monitoring Event

Good afternoon everyone!

The River Alliance of WI is hosting a Statewide AIS Bridge Snapshot day on Saturday, September 13, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  This Snapshot day will be geared towards monitoring of AIS near bridge crossings.  Oneida County has over 1100 lakes, but also harbors miles and miles of rivers, creeks, channels, and thoroughfares.  I am hoping that we can add Oneida County to the list of participating counties! 

To do so, I need some idea of interested lake associations, individuals, civic groups, and teachers/students.  This is a ONE day event, and all training will be provided by your Oneida County AIS Team.

Please respond to this email if you think you might be interested in participating in this unique event.  Also, please list the bridge crossing that you might be interested in monitoring.

We had a fantastic turn-out for last week's Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) workshop!!  Over 50 people attended the event.  I plan on sending out an email specific to that meeting which will include the powerpoint presentation and all pertinent forms.  Please look for the email shortly.

This is an interesting video and deals with Algae Bloom. The Limnologist, Matt Kocian, just happens to be the son of  friends of ours and is a good source of information. Take a look and see how they deal with the problem and what the costs are.

We're Back in Business just in time for Ice Out

Thank you Kari for the photo of the last remaining ice on Lake Thompson as of May 4th. Can you see the block out on the ice? Kari said it fell about a half hour after the photo was taken. So I'm wondering .....who had May 4th as their guess???

The blog has been down as of late but I've managed to figure out the problem and fix it, hopefully it will stay fixed for a good long while!
