Lake Thompson Book

Would you like to participate in a book for Lake Thompson? Then here's your chance. Frosty Smith has started this endeavor and needs some help in accomplishing the final project. There are certainly some stories to tell and with your help we might all be able to enjoy a little history of the Lake. The following is some of the ideas that are possibilities for the book. Dig down deep in your memory banks and see if there is something you can share.

•
Hello fellow lake property owner,

My name is Charles "Frosty" Smith and I have lived on Lake Thompson for the better
part of 50+ years. Over those years I have seen many changes and also known of many things
that have happened on Lake Thompson. As the years go by many people have moved on or
passed away. I had thought about the people that have lived on Lake Thompson over the years
and they all have many interesting stories and will soon be lost.
I have heard and read about other lakes that have books and thought that it was time for
Lake Thompson to have a book too.
I know that each of you has a story about your time on Lake Thompson.
So here is what I would like from you. Only if you want to share your story.
••••
••
•
• Something about who you purchased your property from ?
When you purchased you property ?
Fun events, family gatherings, -and weddings?
Something about your family?
How things have changed over the years?
How you enjoy Lake Thompson summer and winter?
Names of parts of the lake? (West Bay, Feldman's Point, Do Do's rock, LUV rocks, Breezy
Point, etc.)
Fish Stories (the BIG one that got away)!
Do you remember the sea plane that would land on the lake and gave sea plane rides?
Do you know when the Lake Thompson Association was formed and who started it ?
What kind of bird hung above the bar at the old "Pinewood Lodge" ?
That there once was a cabin on the second island ?
How Lake Thompson got its name?
So if you would like to share your story with others. I would need what ever you want to provide,
a written story and if you want pictures will also be used. (pictures will be scanned and returned).
I have already received many stories and some pictures and have found them very interesting to
read. I know all of you will enjoy reading stories and happenings of Lake Thompson.
The dead-line will be April 1, 2009
I am hoping to have the book ready by the summer of 2009.
All profits from the sale will to go to the Lake Thompson Association.

Thank you

Tracks

Well, they're not deer tracks as I think most hunters
would like to see right now. They're simply Mourning
Dove tracks. A foursome were scrounging around the deck at my studio and when I approached them a whole flock flew up right in front of me. I don't think I've ever seen that many Mourning Doves together at once. But all I caught on film were the tracks they left behind.

Everyone is gearing up for the start of hunting season on Saturday and with the cold temps and light snow conditions are looking good. The DNR said that this is not a typical year in that there aren't as many around this year. So it may prove to be a bit more challenging.
Good luck and be safe out there.

Pelican Volunteer Fire Dept.

I recently added a new informative Link to the list. It's the site for the Pelican Volunteer Fire Dept. In some cases they may be more informative than the local paper! They have photos of all the incidents they go to as well as information about what makes up the Volunteer Fire Dept. The key word here is volunteer....all these folks give their time to attend to the needs of our township. If you would like to show your appreciation they have a fund drive every year to purchase the equipment they use, which in turn benefits our community. Give the site a visit and learn how you can help out.

New "Gadget" added to the site...

I've added a new gadget to the site so that you can now subscribe to the blog and receive a notice when a new post has been added. You just need to scroll down on the right hand side till you see Posts Subscribe. When you click on that it will give you easy instructions to have the blog come up on your Google Home page. It does give you some alternate choices as well. Then every time you go to your Google Home page you'll be able to see if there is a new posting. I thought this would be a handy way to keep up with what's happening on Lake Thompson and maybe get some more people involved. Please feel free to comment or send me things that you think are worth posting.

Is it Winter Yet?

Looks like it could be! Yes it did snow last Sunday night and we woke up to 2" of the white stuff. It stayed cold so there are still traces of it on the ground. But Thursday should bring the temps back all the way up to the 60's. At least Trick ot Treaters will have pleasant weather.

Well, the leaves are pretty much off the tress now and the temps have been dipping downward. But the good news is the lake's not frozen yet! But there have been alot of chilly mornings when the lake is perfectly still with a coating of fog.

I wanted to post this certificate we received recognizing our volunteer work with AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) at the landings. A very large pat on the back goes out to our volunteers listed below...

Bob Rossi,Mike Roling,

Mary Oelrich, Tom & Sue Welch, Jim Auchter, Mike & Renee Hodell and kids, Dennis Wittig, and Joel & Kathy Furda

It's been a consensus that many people are becoming aware of this problem and are careful to make sure their boats and trailers are clean. Up until the end of the season we had a clean bill of health, but one of our volunteers did find some Rusty Crayfish, which was identified by the DNR. Therefore we had to place a sign identifying that in our new kiosk. Lets work even harder next year to keep our lake as clean as possible.
